PSG Edges Marseille on Penalties to Claim French Super Cup in the Middle East.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now won the season-opening trophy on 14 different occasions.

The Parisian giants required a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to get past their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup title.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the match featuring the French league winners and the Coupe de France holders after the French winger opened the net in the opening stages.

However, Marseille fired twice late to take a surprise lead. First, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking turn of fortune, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital equaliser in the final moments to force the contest into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, stopping decisive attempts from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all scored successfully for PSG to complete a 4-1 penalty victory.

The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the twelfth time in the last 13 years.
