A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party urged an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
